Core Instrumentation Special Solicitation – Small Equipment

The Core Instrumentation Fund Special Solicitation – Small Equipment aims to provide USC researchers with greater access to shared equipment and key resources, including datasets and repositories, in addition to core instrumentation already available through existing core facilities.

The solicitation will consider requests up to $30,000 (smaller budgets welcomed) and invites proposals from core facilities for the acquisition of small equipment, datasets, and/or repositories.

Applications proposing acquisition or licensing of datasets or repositories not associated with a core facility must be made by the school research dean (or designee). All equipment/datasets/repositories supported under this announcement must be advertised and made available to the entire USC research community. The fund is not intended for purchase of computing equipment, unless it is integrated with other types of instrumentation.’

Deadline: 5pm, Monday, September 5, 2022

Zumberge Research Coordination & Team Building

The Zumberge Research Coordination & Team Building (RCTB) award provides opportunities to foster new collaborations between USC faculty, as well as between USC and other research institutions nationally, with the goal to support faculty teams working on collaborative, multidisciplinary new research projects.

The RCTB award does not fund primary research. Rather, the program supports the means by which investigators can share information and ideas, coordinate ongoing or planned research activities, and foster synthesis and new collaborations. The proposed activities should establish the foundation for members of the collaborative group to create new research projects as well as develop working relationships with state and federal funding agencies and foundations.

Support will be provided for teams of investigators to communicate and coordinate their efforts across disciplinary, organizational, institutional, and geographical boundaries. The objectives are to facilitate open communication and exchange of information and resources as well as to integrate research.

Applications can request up to $25,000. The award does not provide opportunity for renewal.

Deadline: 5 pm, Monday, June 13, 2022

Research and Development (R&D) Priorities Award: Sustainability

Each year the federal government’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) outline the administration’s priorities for multi-agency federal funding for Research and Development (R&D) for the coming fiscal year. Areas of R&D priority for FY23 were detailed in the “Memorandum for the Heads of Executive Departments and Agencies” issued Aug 27, 2021.

The USC R&D Priorities Award provides seed funding for interdisciplinary collaborative research activities involving groups of faculty from multiple schools who are preparing a proposal for an externally funded grant in areas of R&D priorities outlined by the OMB/OSTP. Applications can request up to $75,000; awards are for a period of one year.

Research areas currently identified as priorities for continued federal funding in R&D include science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and engagement; technology transfer and commercialization; and research infrastructure.

Within the topics targeted by the federal government for FY23 funding, eligible topics for this Request for Proposals include:

  • Energy Transition: Research to develop clean power technologies harnessing clean energy solutions to achieve universal access to energy that is sustainable and affordable. Additional areas of research include the development of policy and regulatory frameworks to (a) attract the private sector to help deliver and finance these investment needs and (b) support engagement with communities to make a secure and just transition to clean power and other economic opportunities.
  • Blue Technology: Research to develop technology that promotes a sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth in areas such as, but not limited to, aquaculture, biodiversity, costal protection, renewable energy output, seafood production, cultural values, and tourism, while preserving the health of marine and coastal ecosystem. Blue technology is largely driven by “blue thinking,” the idea that eco-sustainability and renewable resources represent a broad range of possibilities for the benefit of social and economic growth.

Zumberge Interdisciplinary Research Award

Zumberge Multi-School Interdisciplinary Research Awards provide seed funding for broad, collaborative research activities that are interdisciplinary and involve groups of faculty from multiple schools across USC. Successful proposals are led by faculty with strong records of previous research accomplishments. Interdisciplinary awards are intended for teams of such faculty who are preparing a proposal for an externally funded multi-investigator grant on the scale of an interdisciplinary center, training grant or program project award.

To be considered for this award, applications must (a) plan to apply to a specific externally-funded grant, (b) provide a realistic plan for sustained funding or support beyond the end of the award, and (c) demonstrate that a Zumberge award will make a difference in attracting further research support.

Large Research Grants: provide up to $85,000 in funding and are intended to support activities that take place over a one-year period.

Small Research Grants: provide up to $10,000 and are intended to support projects that typically last no more than three months.

Deadline Large Grants: 5 pm, Monday, March 21, 2022
Deadline Small Grants: Proposals will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Research Collaboration Fund

The Research Collaboration Fund supports research collaborations among faculty and students working on interdisciplinary societally-relevant research topics, such as pandemic-related topics, equity and inclusion, climate change, neuroscience, mindfulness and behavioral science, digital humanities, and climate change, among many others.

The aim of these awards is not to fund specific research projects, but rather to support teams of faculty who aim to establish or foster a community of scholars at USC organized around a broad topic of shared interest.  We seek proposals that creatively overcome current pandemic limitations on travel and in-person meetings, proposing new and engaging ways to bring people together with activities that develop the impact of the collaborative group.

The proposed activities should establish the foundation for members of the collaborative group to create new research projects as well as contribute to strengthening the individual research programs of its members and others as USC. Encouraged activities include an educational component, providing students an opportunity to not only participate but assist in the design and organization of events.

Each collaboration should engage a large group of faculty (normally 10 or more), representing at least two schools at USC.  The proposed support can be for up to three years, with the possibility of competitive renewal thereafter based on impact.

Deadline: 5 pm, Monday, February 28, 2022

Zumberge Diversity and Inclusion Research Award

Diversity in research is a key component of innovation. It enhances the creative process by bringing to the table new concepts and points of view and contributes to a culture of transformative scholarship. The Zumberge Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) in Research Award aims to support research and scholarship that addresses critical gaps in knowledge on equity, diversity, and inclusion, or that benefits under-represented and/or disenfranchised communities. To achieve these goals, the Zumberge D&I in Research Award provides $10,000 to $30,000 in research support.

This program is primarily intended to support research addressing equity, diversity, and inclusion, and/or that benefits under-represented and/or disenfranchised communities. The concept of diversity includes characteristics such as national origin, language, race, color, disability, ethnicity, gender, age religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, veteran status, educational background, and family structures.
